Katten actively recruits minority students and attorneys through firm-sponsored programs, partnerships with schools and civic organizations, and job fairs.

Every year, the firm’s Minority Scholarship Program awards three $15,000 scholarships to eligible minority first-year law students participating in our Summer Associate Program in Chicago. The recipients are selected based on several criteria, including superior academic achievement, leadership experience and personal qualities that reflect the potential for outstanding contributions to Katten and the legal profession.

Katten also contributes to the American Bar Foundation’s Summer Diversity Fellowship program, which affords four highly qualified undergraduates from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to work with ABF Research Fellows and receive an introduction to the practice of law in Chicago.

In New York, the firm participates in the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Corporate Law Program, which recruits and trains exceptional college students and recent college graduates of color for summer internships in prestigious law firms and financial institutions, and the New York City Bar Diversity Fellowship Program, which places first-year law students of color from the 11 New York City law schools with law firms and corporate departments.

Since 2004, Katten, along with the Latino Law Students Association of the University of Chicago, has held a mock interview program for Latino law students in which firm attorneys interview first year law students and provide each student with constructive criticism regarding their resumes and interview skills. After the interviews, the students participate in a panel discussion with members of the firm’s recruiting committee.
